Over the next couple of years, I plan on creating a Memoir Journal. I want to create a sort of non scrapbook, an artistic rendering of my marriage with Jason. It's going to be a true labor of love, and I am going to keep the journal hidden from my husband and give it to him on his birthday.
If you want to do something similar, here are some ideas to get you started. Making a visual documentation of family events, epic moments and adventures is a great gift to give a loved one. It's also an amazing testament to how much you cherish those moments!
Take some time and jot down a list of memories you would like to incorporate into the journal. It might help jog your memory if you look at old photos. Save photos in a folder on your computer to use as reference for the artwork, or create some abstract representations of yourself and your significant other. Even if you can only draw stick figures, imagine how fun and magical it would be to pull together a little book of even sketches.
Incorporate different media in the journal. You could paint or draw some of the elements. You could use bic pens and fill in shapes here and there with marker to give the journal a consistent theme. You could collage photos into certain areas of the journal, or glue in envelopes as pockets to hold memorabilia from years past. Another idea is to paint watercolor backgrounds in an abstract way and then write out some of the memories over the painting. The sky is really the limit with this kind of project!
Keep the work hidden and only get it out when you have privacy. Aim for a reasonable time frame to get the journal done, you could even create one for each year and make it tradition as a New Year's gift. Even if you are super busy this project can be accomplished in little batches of time here and there. Create a memoir journal to give as a gift that will be treasured forever!
