From looking at this mobile, you would never guess that it only took a few dollars and about an hour to make! I made this for my living room, however it would be such a cute holiday gift as well. So I wanted to share a quick tutorial here for everyone who enjoys bringing a handmade element to gift giving.
hemp thread or kitchen string
a few scraps of felt
white glue and strip of fabric (optional)
skein of embroidery floss and sewing needle
Here's how it's done:
1. Put a dab of white glue (elmer's, mod podge, whatever you have) onto the embroidery hoop, just to the left of the metal part. Glue the edge of the fabric strip down, then wrap the strip around the hoop until you get to the other side of the metal part. Glue that side down too. If you don't have glue you could always just tie the fabric into a knot.
2. draw shapes onto the felt scraps...I chose to do simple stars in random sizes. You could do circles or other shapes, or get really creative and layer the shapes onto each other with glue or sewing to create rainbows and clouds. To make it festive you could create little miniature holiday shapes like stockings, gingerbread men and the like. Cut out the shapes.
3. Thread a needle with a bit of embroidery floss, tie a knot at the end. Then thread a felt shape onto the floss. Leave a longish amount of floss in random lengths for each shape and tie them onto the hoop.
4. Once you have all your shapes tied on cut out three long pieces of hemp thread in equal lengths. About an arms length works great, or longer depending on how far down you want the mobile to hang. Tie each piece of string onto the embroidery hoop at roughly equal distance apart. Then gather them up in the center, adjusting the hoop so that it hangs at about level and then make a knot. Finally knot a loop at the top for simple display and you are done!
