For the past few months, I have been looking for various ways to get involved with different charities. It all started with a Wayne Dyer book called "Your Sacred Self". I donated a huge box of clothing and another box of books to the Salvation Army. It felt so good to know that my donation might provide some fun additions to other people's lives.
There is a back story, for many years I have wanted to figure out what my contribution could be to help other people. I went through my own healing journey and then there came a time when I was desperately trying to figure out my life purpose. I was asking myself questions like "Why am I here?", and "What do I have to give?" I felt this near compulsion to try to find a way to be of service. And in the past trying to sell my artwork...it really felt like a shallow pursuit. I felt like it was good and all to sell works that add beauty to the world, but I know there is so much more to this life.
So after I donated the boxes to the Salvation Army, I made a pact with myself that I would keep looking for ways to donate or give back in some way. I contacted the local Make-A-Wish foundation and contributed to their campaign. Next I donated to a Kickstarter and helped a band reach enough funds to record their next album. Currently I'm making art cards and writing letters for Letters Against Depression.
In finding ways to give back I've been homing in on my gifts. Everyone has unique gifts to offer the world. I love to encourage people who are making art because I know what it is like to create with very little feedback. I also love introspection and diving deep into the waters of healing work and culture. Through all the volunteer work and reaching out to help I have become much more clear on ways I want to show up in the world. The ripple effect has been huge, even impacting my home life. Now I look for ways to go above and beyond to be of service in my marriage. I've taken over my husband's household chores because he has been under a lot of pressure at work.
The greatest gift of volunteering has been more clarity about what I want to offer the world. I really want to share my gifts in a way that can guide other people to learning more about their own creative gifts. I want to guide people to explore their personal culture, heritage and histories. I want to help people make sense of the journey they are on through creativity and art journaling.
If you have been wondering about your life purpose, or wanting to find more ways to help other people; start volunteering. By giving to others you connect with a place inside that guides you to your own true path. It feels so amazing to give and you can make a difference in the world. You can be the change you wish to see in this world.
