Getting Real with Your Life Plans
It can be so easy to get stuck in the past! Believe me, I have been there more times than I care to admit...wondering what might have been if I had done things differently. In Buddhism there is a teaching that you create your future right now, in this moment. If you want to see what your future is going to look like, take a look at the moment you are in. Change only happens in the present moment and when you are stuck in the past you give your power away and cannot enact change to create a good life right now...in the present.
Here's a little exercise for getting real with your life plans. I call this the Shoulda Coulda Woulda journal page.
Create a list on the left hand side of your paper and list out all those regrets you have. Maybe you wonder if you had done x, y and z...what would your life be like now? Get it all out on the page. Then on the right hand side of the page bring the focus to the present. Make a list of some action steps you can take today to have the kinda life you've been dreaming of.
I started with some background color...I used craft paints however watercolor would work too. Then I used sharpie markers to stencil on the words and added my little green haired vixen at the bottom left hand corner. Then I drew a line down the middle of the page...
What I noticed when I created these lists is just how transformative this exercise truly can be! When I began to look at my list of regrets there were so many little nuggets of wisdom to be transformed into actions that I can take today! I created the action list like it was being spoken by a wise friend talking to me, to get the message through. I have so many new ideas from that list of ways to live my life today that can honor those desires that I thought I could never bring to fruition.
Try this for yourself and see what you can come up with. Now is the only time you will ever have...this moment is your chance to do things that you have always wanted to do. Make the present moment count...life is short and it is possible to be quite satisfied with your life! Now go forth and take action!
