A Big Important Art Book (Now with Women)
I’ve been slowly reading the book “A Big Important Art Book (Now with Women) by Danielle Krysa, and it is totally changing the way I view art! For the most part my view of women in art has been limited to art i see on social media. Sure I have been to the local museum a few times, I’ve seen art by the masters. But so few of them were women!
In the past of course there were women artists but they were not celebrated as often as male artists were. I truly feel that is changing today. But more than that, as a hobby artist my vision of what art is and can be has been limited because I never went to school for art. This book is giving me a different definition of what art is, and it is stretching me in new ways to grow as a creative. Professional art is often concept driven and relies more on the story behind the work rather than just on the work itself. And art and craft can come together to produce a concept that is greater than the sum of its parts.
I’m learning about all these fabulous female artists who are taking the art world by storm! It is so inspirational to see what women are creating. One interesting thing is that many women go to school and begin by majoring in painting and then change their focus to other mediums over the course of their schooling.
I feel challenged to bring together my fabric arts and visual skills in new and totally exciting ways. I’m not sure what the new year holds for my art but it feels incredible to be thinking outside the box and trying out some new things.
